Pet Behavior Consulting - Creating Harmony Between You and Your Pets

Having been involved with dogs and rescues for several years, I learned firsthand the difficulty and importance of finding someone who is qualified to help the dog parents or foster parents to deal with and improve some possible behavior and training issues that their pups are experiencing.  Getting someone to help who is not adequately trained or uses questionable techniques could very quickly make things just that much worse, even if it appears that the issues are improving at first.  It is really easy to get lost in the Internet search and confused about how to find and choose someone who is good at what they do and is qualified to provide such services.

A few years ago, I was fortunate to find a person who has since been a great resource and have helped few of my foster dogs to improve, and have a much better chance of finding a forever home.  That person is Elise Gouge from Pet Behavior Consulting, LLC.

Some fourteen years ago, after working in social services in clinical capacity with children and families that struggled with severe emotional issues, Elise realized that her calling was working with and helping dogs.  Having a strong background in psychology and behavior modification became very useful when she started working with animals full-time.  Elise has a great appreciation of the dynamics of families, what type of plan they need to succeed, and how to help the people understand what's going on with their pet and why the pet is having behavior issues.  She is very committed to helping owners find practical, easily applied plans so they can have a safe, happy and enjoyable relationship with their pet.

Elise notes that finding a way to build the relationship is huge!  If you think about it, most of the time we talk to our pets is because they are either doing something wrong (hey, get off the counter!) or you're ending a fun time (ok, time to get in your crate while I go to work).  She suggests that using play or enrichment, you find ways to have your pet do things you ask where the outcome is a reward for the pet and not you.  This increases the pet's desire to want to work for you, to listen to you, to want to be with you...ALL things you'll want when and if there is a naughty or unwanted behavior you decide to fix!

Elise, who has four beautiful border collies of her own, says that she loves seeing dogs do the things they were bred to do and enjoy doing.  Seeing her dogs herd sheep is amazing!  Whether it’s a retrieving Retriever, a lap dog Cavalier or a hunting Beagle, it’s always cool to see dogs do their thing.  Elise also enjoys leash walking with her dogs, as it is a healthy activity, and is peaceful and bonding.
